Today marked the opening of Part Two of “The Coast of Utopia” trilogy. “Shipwreck” opened on Broadway today at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater. The trilogy covers the story of 19th-century intellectuals who debate political issues and philosophy over a 30-year time period as they strive to make changes in their political system.
The first section, “Voyage,” was released Nov. 27th and is where the story begins, in 1833. Reviews were mostly positive. This second installment starts outside Moscow 13 years later, following the characters through Dresden, Paris and Nice.
Part three, “Salvage,” opens Feb. 15. All three plays will be performed until the newly extended date of May 13, 2007. If one is interested in seeing all three in succession, there will be nine Saturday marathons offered to view the 8-hour trilogy at once.
The dates will be Feb. 24, March 3, March 10, March 24, March 31, April 7, April 21, April 28 and May 5th.
“The Coast of Utopia” previewed in London in 2002, under a different director. This version on Broadway is directed by veteran Jack O’Brien, known for such successes as “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Hairspray.”
