On September 15, 2007, Blues Guitarman, and former short track stock car champion, Hal Hammer, Jr., participated in a special "Car Control" clinic at Bristol Motor Speedway. Hammer, driving the #48 Lowes Chevrolet, normally driven by Jimmy Johnson, bested a field of some 30 drivers from all over the USA, who had come to participate in this unique event. Hal drove the #48 Chevrolet on the high banks of Bristol, setting the quickest and fastest laps of the session. Still active in music, but retired from racing, Hammer categorized the event as a "refresher" for him and said that events like this help him retain his competative driving skills. In the last session, Hal's driving style brought cheers from a standing crowd of spectators and VIPs and his wife, Terri, said, "He wondered if he still had it . . And I would say that he definately does".
