Chelsea are to face the Los Angeles Galaxy on July 21 in an exhibition game as part of what has been termed "the World Series of Soccer" for reasons that have not been made completely clear. Beckham made headlines regularly in England, often for his off-field behavior as much as his soccer skills, and was seen walking around Manchester in a kimono on one occasion, eliciting mass snickers among the Mancunian fashion hawks. The game is probably going to be Beckham's debut, and Americans are anticipating an elegant performance from the effeminate, soft-spoken, dress-wearing former Manchester United midfielder and England captain.
South Korea's Suwon Bluewings will play Chelsea on July 17 while the Galaxy take on Mexico's Tigres. The Bluewings and tigres will clash July 21.
Beckham's career in England was marred by a number of high profile incidents, and his sending off in the France '98 World Cup game against Argentina created a conflict in England between Manchester and the rest of the country, who ridiculously accused the girlish Beckham of blowing England's World Cup chances, a joke in itself for those of you conversant with the under-achieving antics of England's national side.
But it was the locker-room incident involving his then coach at Manchester, Sir Alex Ferguson, that became pivotal to Beckham's transfer to Spanish giants Real Madrid. Following an FA Cup defeat to rivals Arsenal, Ferguson lashed out with his foot at a football boot lying on the ground, sending the boot crashing into Beckham's head, causing a wound that required two stitches. An average on-field clash in soccer requires five stitches, by my estimations, and this little spat was blown up out of all proportion. Some blamed the media, but some blamed Beckham's fame-hungry wife, Posh Spice, who was known to look down her nose at Manchester and to be fond of Milan.
Ferguson weighed all of these things up in his calculating Scottish mind, and sent the midfield maestro packing to Madrid, where he set alight the Spanish crowds and became a favorite at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, finding a new lease on his footballing life and becoming more famous than ever.
News that Beckham was coming to the USA thrilled American soccer fans, and now all of MLS is waiting for their hero to pull on the LA Galaxy shirt. With his England career over, Beckham is free to give his all to MLS, and there are plenty who are hoping he has something left to give. Tickets for Galaxy games are expected to be pretty high demand this coming season, so make sure you grab yours in good time, when the Beckham roadshow comes to a town near you.
