Review of The Science of Sleep

As this is supposed to be a music blog, you may be wondering why I am writing a movie review. The Science of Sleep has a great soundtrack. There, got the music bit out the way.

The real reason I am writing this review is that the Science of Sleep is an amazing, mind-bending film that should inspire artists of all types (musicians included). I loved this movie and am shuttling everyone I know to the theater to see it right away.

For those of you that haven't heard of it, the Science of Sleep was written and directed by Michel Gondry, who co-wrote and directed the popular film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

As in Eternal Sunshine, Gondry revisits the world of the mind, following Stephane (played by Gael Garcia Bernal of Motorcycle Diaries and Y tu mama tambien fame), an artist working in a calendar factory who has trouble distinguishing between his waking life and the world of his dreams. The story is largely a love story between Stephane and his neighbor Stephanie (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) with a strong dose of magical realism thrown in (Stephane is also an inventor who makes mind reading devices and time machines).

This film is a cross between a Wes Anderson film (Bottle Rocket, The Life Aquatic) with great dialogue and clever, sensitive performances, and a Brothers Quay movie, with amazing stop motion animation. As Stephane's dreams come to life the film is flooded with a stunning array of visual wonders. There is a ton of charm throughout and you will certainly leave the theater with something to think (and dream) about.
